Surveillance Mirrors For Security & Safety, Detection & Observation

A Surveillance mirror can be either a convex mirror or flat mirror in round, rectangular or dome form. Each one is unique in its design and is better suited for certain applications. Surveillance mirrors are preferred in the following applications:

  • A security mirror to keep watch over high value assets or blind spot areas in retail stores
  • A safety mirror to monitor activity in care facilities and other sensitive areas
  • A detection mirror to alert the presence of activity in monitored areas
  • An observation mirror to observe activity and productivity of people, machinery, animals, etc

How the surveillance mirror is used is the most important factor when determining what type, shape and size mirror is needed. Taking a quick survey and analysis of the area will provide you with the questions needed to ask yourself in order to come up with the right mirror type:

  • If you desire a panoramic, “bird’s eye” view of the area that will allow you to look up at the ceiling for a 360 degree viewing  then a full dome mirror is recommended
  • If you are in a retail environment needing to see down store aisles, gondolas, shelves or coolers then a round convex or rectangular convex mirror is suggested
  • If you looking to inspect employee or machinery productivity on assembly lines and production areas then a flat mirror is most often preferred.
  • If you are a care facility needing to monitor the activity in play rooms, hospital rooms, and sensitive areas then an unbreakable convex mirror is needed.
  • If you are monitoring the activity in a jail cell, prison, or psychiatric ward then a unbreakable half dome or unbreakable quarter dome mirror is desired.

The shape of the mirror (round, rectangular, dome, or flat) is something that should not be overlooked. Most often it will determine what the images will appear like in the surveillance mirror. Because of the convex mirror’s intentional curved design, the images are slightly distorted. This is a desired effect which allows the convex mirror to cover more area than other mirror types. Round and rectangular convex surveillance mirrors are beneficial in retail stores, warehouses offices and care facilities where large areas need to be covered. In a production facility for the inspection of machinery or production lines you want a flat mirror as they provide a true, undistorted one to one reflection.  Dome mirrors are also convex in design and because of their compact shape, produce an image which appears to shrink images in order to cover more area. They are a good choice when you just need to view activity and not detailed images.

Surveillance Mirrors are suitable for indoor or outdoor use. Outdoor surveillance mirrors should be ordered with ABS plastic or steel backing material if the mirror will receive direct exposure to the elements.  Outdoor surveillance mirrors are often used by convenience stores and gas stations to monitor fuel pump activity and by warehouses in loading dock areas. If the mirror is placed in locations where the mirror could be vandalized or in an area where impacts to the mirror’s lens is possible, an unbreakable convex mirror is highly recommended.  Round and rectangular convex models are equipped with adjustable swivel arms, brackets and mounting hardware while dome mirrors have a predrilled hole in the flange for mounting. Full dome versions 18” and larger are equipped with hanging chains so the dome may be suspended from the ceiling if desired.
